Diamond Guide - Understanding Quality
Introduction: Why Diamond Quality Matters
Diamonds have long been a symbol of enduring love, strength, and refined elegance. Whether you’re selecting a Diamond engagement ring, investing in a timeless pendant, or commissioning a bespoke piece, understanding Diamond quality is essential. With so many options available, even the most discerning buyers can feel overwhelmed. At The Graduate®, we believe that knowledge empowers confidence — and this guide is designed to illuminate the key factors that define a Diamond’s true value and beauty.
Diamond jewellery is revered the world over, not merely for its brilliance but for its power to embody legacy, style and emotion in a way few other materials can. Diamond pieces speak of refined taste and meaningful craftsmanship. We believe each Diamond tells a story — one of precision, rarity, and individual character
The unique features of Diamond jewellery — from its unmatched brilliance and durability to its symbolism and individuality — make it a category of its own. It transcends trends and seasons, holding its place at the heart of personal expression and celebration. The 4Cs: The Foundation of Diamond Grading
The globally recognised standard for assessing Diamond quality is known as the 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat. These four criteria, introduced by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), provide a comprehensive grading system that determines a Diamond’s worth.
1. Cut: The Sparkle Factor
Cut refers not to a Diamond’s shape (such as round or princess) but to how well it has been proportioned and faceted. A well-cut Diamond reflects and refracts light to produce brilliance, fire, and scintillation. If a Diamond is cut too shallow or too deep, it will appear dull or dark.
At The Graduate®, we select only Diamonds with exceptional cut grades, favouring those that maximise natural sparkle. We often recommend round brilliant and princess cuts, both of which are known for their high light performance.
2. Colour: The Purity of Tone
Diamonds are graded on a colour scale from D (colourless) to Z (noticeably a Champagne or Cognac tint). Truly colourless Diamonds (such as D, E or F) are extremely rare and prized for their purity. The Graduate® & The Princess® collections only contain F colour Diamonds.
Coloured Diamonds — such as fancy yellows, blues, or pinks — are graded differently and are valued based on the intensity and distribution of their hue.
3. Clarity: The Presence of Inclusions
Clarity assesses the presence of internal inclusions. The GIA clarity scale ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1-I3). While flawless Diamonds are extraordinarily rare, many inclusions are microscopic and do not impact a Diamond’s appearance without magnification.
Our philosophy at The Graduate® is to prioritise VS Clarity Diamonds — stones in which inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. This ensures beauty without compromising on budget.
4. Carat: The Weight and Size
Carat weight measures how much a Diamond weighs, not its size — though larger carats typically result in larger-looking stones. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger Diamonds are rarer and therefore more valuable per carat, but two Diamonds of the same weight can vary greatly in value depending on the other 3Cs.
Beyond the 4Cs: Other Key Considerations
Certification
Always choose certified Diamonds from a trusted grading body such as the GIA.
The Gemological Institute of America Certification provides an independent assessment of the Diamond’s characteristics, offering transparency and peace of mind.
All Diamonds used in The Graduate® & The Princess® collections come with full GIA certification and ethical sourcing assurances.
Ethical Sourcing
Modern luxury demands conscience as well as craftsmanship. Ethically sourced Diamonds ensure your jewellery aligns with responsible mining practices and human rights standards.
At TheGraduateJewellery.com we are committed to sourcing conflict-free Diamonds.
In today’s world, provenance matters as much as aesthetics. Ethical sourcing is a key feature of modern Diamond jewellery. Clients want to know that their jewellery has been crafted responsibly, with respect for both people and the planet.
Durability: A Legacy That Lasts Generations
Diamonds are the hardest natural material on Earth, rating 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. This makes them an ideal choice for everyday wear. Their resilience means Diamond jewellery can endure a lifetime — and often more — with minimal wear.
This durability also allows Jewellers to create intricate settings and detailed craftsmanship that might not be suitable with more fragile stones. At The Graduate®, we design with this in mind, offering settings that are both secure and elegant, ensuring the Diamond’s strength is matched by the structural integrity of the piece with innovation in Setting and Style.
What elevates a Diamond beyond its natural brilliance is how it’s set. The artistry of Diamond jewellery lies in how the stone is framed, supported, and showcased. Graduated designs, like those featured in The Graduate® use size progression to create a visual flow and refined rhythm across the piece.
A Sound Investment in Beauty
While Diamonds are first and foremost objects of beauty and sentiment, they are also seen by many as long-term investments. High-quality Diamonds with proper certification can retain — or even grow — in value over time. They become heirlooms, passed down through generations, each adding to the story of the piece.
Our clients often choose certified Diamonds with strong grading in cut, colour, clarity, and carat to ensure their purchase is a lasting one. These are pieces designed to stand the test of time — stylistically, emotionally, and materially.
